GERMAN THEME AT CARNEGIE LIBRARY IN AYR
South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan warmly welcomed guests to the opening of an exhibition at Carnegie Library in Ayr to mark the link between Prestwick and its twin town of Lichtenfels in Northern Bavaria, Germany. Dr Ursula Bader, from Lichtenfels, officially opened the exhibition. As part of the celebrations a section of Carnegie Library was transformed into a little part of Germany. German music was played, snacks were served, a mini beer festival took place and a gazebo was erected to add atmosphere to the evening. Prestwick Town Twinning Association and Lichtenfels, which is similar in size to Prestwick, have been officially linked since 1974. Lichtenfels is a busy town that for centuries has been the centre of the German wickerwork and basket industry with college training programmes available. Local family firms produce quality furniture and every September a Basket Festival is held that provides a showcase for people involved in the wickerwork industry. Speaking about the exhibition Provost Winifred Sloan said: “The exhibition is very good and it will give people a chance to learn more about the connection between Prestwick and Lichtenfels in Germany. Strong connections have been established since the towns officially linked over thirty years ago and each town has become part of the others history.” On 23 October 2006 a basketweaver will be in residence at Carnegie Library and will give free basketweaving demonstrations between 11 am and 3.30 pm. The Prestwick Town Twinning Association and Lichtenfels exhibition will be open to members of the public until Saturday 28 October 2006.
