‘CLASS DIAMONDS’ GRADUATION
Twenty five South Ayrshire residents between 53 and 83 years of age have all successfully graduated from a ‘Class Diamonds’ course which was held in Wallacetown Church Hall, Ayr. The ‘Class Diamonds’ initiative was originally launched in September 2002, to encourage people approaching or in retirement, to remain active in their homes and in their communities. The courses have been successfully run throughout South Ayrshire and aim to encourage exercise and activity, raise health and safety awareness, and encourage people to socialise. To mark the achievement of those who took part in the course the Vice Convener of South Ayrshire Council’s Community Safety Committee, Councillor Bill McIntosh and Councillor Ian Cavana, local Member for Ayr Craigie, presented each class member with a certificate. The invited guests and members of the class then enjoyed refreshments and a special celebration ‘Class Diamonds’ cake. Councillor Bill McIntosh said: “Class Diamonds courses are always popular and provide a fun environment to learn and socialise in. The range of activities and topics covered during the ‘Class Diamonds’ course was very varied so there was something for everyone. I would like to congratulate everyone who successfully completed the course.” Weekly presentations were made by appropriate people from relevant agencies, the topics covered included:
Everyone attending the course had an opportunity to try a range of specially adapted activities including curling, bowling, Tai Chi and yoga. “Initiatives such as this one demonstrate that by working together in partnership agencies can provide courses which are fun, educational and importantly provide an opportunity for people to socialise in a friendly safe environment.” Anyone who would like more information about FREE ‘Class Diamonds’ classes should contact Pamela Macrae, Public Health Co-ordinator, telephone number 01292 513867.
