| South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan hosted a Civic Reception for members of the Ayr-Paris Band as part of their anniversary celebrations, also present at the reception was Mayor Kim Denouden from Ayr Ontario.
The Ayr-Paris Band are this year celebrating their 50th anniversary and as part of their celebrations are on a tour of Ireland and Scotland. The band is made up of people of all ages and all musical abilities, with relatives often playing in the band, and has an excellent reputation both at home and in the countries it has visited. As people from Ayr in South Ayrshire founded Ayr Ontario village there is a natural history between the two places and for over 40 years connections have been established. The Provost, Mayor Kim Denouden and the Director of the Band, Merry Schmidt, signed a Friendship Certificate at the reception. The certificate is a symbol of the ties between the two areas. Provost Sloan will display one of the certificates in her office and the other will be displayed in Ayr Ontario. Provost Sloan presented the Band with a quaich to mark their 50th anniversary, which will be awarded annually to the most promising musician. The gift was accepted on behalf of the band by their Director, Merry Schmidt. Speaking after the reception Provost Sloan said: “The Ayr-Paris Band is an inspiration, their music is outstanding and the fact that the band is made up of people of all ages and abilities makes it even more special. Some players are professionals, others are just starting to play instruments and some are accomplished amateurs, this gives a very good mix of talents, raw enthusiasm and cool professionalism. “I am sure that those attending the Ayr Flower Show, where the Band will be playing, will thoroughly enjoy their music. Playing at the Show will be something that the band members will be able to look back on, along with memories of the times when they played in the Disney Parade, the Toronto St Patrick’s Parade and the Toronto Christmas Parade. “The ties between the two towns are becoming stronger each year and the signing of the Friendship Certificates is a demonstration of the connections between the two towns.” Members of the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra and Ayr Pipe Band will join with the Ayr-Paris Band to perform a concert at Ayr Town Hall.
