NEW ARTS ACTIVITIES AT SOUTHPARK SCHOOL

Southpark School in Ayr is using funding of £5,000 it secured from the National Lottery 'Awards for All' to run classes for students so that they can experience a wider range of arts and sports activities.

By using the funding, and working in partnership with South Ayrshire Council's Arts Links Officer, students are working with specialist arts organisations in dance, drama, arts and crafts and also developing football activities.

Staff at the school invited the Convener of the Council's Lifelong Learning Committee, Councillor Pam Paterson to come and see the activities, she said: "The young people attending Southpark School are being provided with an opportunity to participate in dance classes, drama workshops and try a range of arts and crafts. In addition there are football activities that have been specifically tailored to meet their special support needs. These activities will be of great benefit to the students allowing them to enjoy new experiences and to build up their self-confidence."

Through the Scottish Government's Youth Music Initiative Southpark School and neighbouring Craigpark School will also be involved in a 30 week programme of specialist music workshops. These will be delivered by the national inclusive music organisation 'Drake Music Scotland' who, using music technology, work nationally across education, health and community sectors to provide opportunities for people of all ages and those with a wide range of disabilities to play, learn and compose music independently.
