ROAD SAFETY CALENDAR COMPETITION
Daisey Queen from St John’s Primary School in Ayr has been declared the overall winner in South Ayrshire Council’s Road Safety calendar competition at a special ceremony held within the Council’s Headquarters. The Council’s Road Safety staff organise an annual competition for primary and secondary schools, which invites pupils to design artwork for inclusion in a road safety calendar. Every year the calendar has a different theme, and for 2005 it is ‘Crossing with the school crossing patroller.’By giving the young people entering the competition a theme it meant that they had to carefully consider the correct way to cross a road going to and from school with help from the school crossing patroller before beginning their artwork. The judges, Convener of South Ayrshire Council’s Economic and Tourism Development Committee, Councillor Robert Campbell and Bobby McVeigh, Council Transport Manager, studied all the artwork before choosing entries in each group whose creators would receive either a commended, highly commended, or winners certificate. From the winning group entries the judges then selected an overall winner, and that was the design by Daisey Queen. Daisy’s winning design has been reproduced at the top of the 2005 Road Safety calendar that is used by Council employees, within a range of Council establishments such as libraries, and is sent out to a variety of external organisations. The young people whose work was selected by the judges were invited to attend a special awards ceremony at the County Buildings, with each pupil being given the opportunity to have a member of their school staff and a parent accompany them. After presenting certificates and prizes Councillor Robert Campbell said: “The Road Safety calendar competition always attracts a large number of entries. “Young people learn about road safety in a fun way while designing their artwork, and also have the added bonus of knowing that their work may be chosen to feature in a calendar. “I would like to congratulate everyone who entered the competition, and particularly Daisey Queen from St John’s Primary School whose spectacular design led to her being chosen as the overall winner. The competition was divided into four groups, P1 to P3, P4 to P5, P6 to P7 and secondary pupils. Designs in each group were selected and awarded commended, highly commended or winner status.
