The Convener of South Ayrshire Council’s Planning Committee, Councillor Helen Moonie has welcomed the publication of the Scottish Government’s Planning White paper.
The Executive’s White Paper acknowledges local authorities continuing key role in shaping the future of the planning system in Scotland that is currently undergoing a major review.
The Council’s Planning Convener, Councillor Helen Moonie said: “South Ayrshire Council has already extended an invitation to the Scottish Government for them to arrange for a representative to address Elected Members about the White Paper.
“Planning is something that affects the lives of everyone, whether it is new commercial or private developments within their community, or developing their own property.
“Members of the Planning Committee have to work within strict guidelines laid down by the Scottish Government, and it has long been recognised that there is a need to bring the planning system up to date to meet the needs of a modern society.
“South Ayrshire Council, along with other local authorities has been asking for some considerable time for changes to be made to the planning system which will be of benefit to everyone.
“The White Paper proposes to make changes that should help regeneration, by across Scotland strategically linking planning regulations to other national strategies such as water and sewerage infrastructures, and other key agencies such as SEPA and Scottish Water.
“It is important that residents and business owners in South Ayrshire and beyond clearly understand how the planning process operates, and understand the parameters within which Councils must operate.
“Following important debates that I am sure will ensue
from the White Paper, it is to be hoped that later this year
a Planning Bill will be brought forward which, while ensuring
that local democratic accountability is retained, will help South
Ayrshire and Scotland to reach its potential.”
