FUN SUMMER ACTIVITIES - MUIRHEAD COMMUNITY SCHOOL TROON
| Many children have already enjoying an action packed summer by
taking part in the ‘Junior Sports Academy that was run by
South Ayrshire Council at Muirhead Community School in Troon. The
month long sports programme offered children the chance to take
part in a variety of fun activities and sports coaching sessions
that catered for various ages and abilities. The children were
able to choose from gymnastics, golf, tennis, dance theatre, basketball,
guitar lessons, a computer club and a special ‘gamezone’,
that was a mixture of arts and crafts and games and sport.
The sports coaching classes featured a different sport every week giving the children the opportunity to learn and develop their sports skills, as tuition was available from experienced coaches. As the Open Golf was being held at St Andrews, some of the children went on a visit to see the world class golfers in action, and some were lucky enough to meet Tiger Woods. The programme was intended to motivate children to become involved in physical activities during their summer holidays. A number of parents whose children took part in the activities stayed within the school and took part in the ‘Introduction to Computers’ class for two hours each week. This gave the parents an opportunity to learn basic Information Technology skills, which may be of use to them when applying for employment, or assist them in further education projects. The Council has produced a Summer Holiday Programme 2005, which is available at libraries.
