CALLING ALL JUNIOR GOLFERS

There is still time for junior golfers to enter the 2005 Troon Junior Golf Open, at which the Tom Lehman Trophies are awarded.

The Open competition, which is in its eighth year, is firmly established as one of the top events for young golfers in the United Kingdom, and this year it is anticipated that more than 400 junior golfers from all over the world will take part.

The tournament, which is believed to be the world’s largest Junior Golf Championship, will be played over South Ayrshire Council’s popular Lochgreen, Darley and Fullarton courses on Tuesday 2 August 2005.

American professional golfer Tom Lehman was so impressed with golfing facilities in Troon when he played in the Open at Troon in 1997, that he donated £500 to the Council to use to promote the development of junior golf in the Troon area. The donation was used to purchase two silver replica claret jugs that are awarded annually to the boy and girl who achieve the best gross score.

Provost Gordon McKenzie will present the claret jugs, and many other prizes, at an awards ceremony that will be held within Troon Municpal Golf Clubhouse on the day of the event.

There are still some places available in the tournament that consists of five separate handicap competitions, each open to youngsters from eight to eighteen years of age.

Anyone who would like to participate in the event will need to complete and submit an entry form before Tuesday 19 July 2005 and pay a £3.00 entry fee. Entry forms can be submitted electronically by logging on to the Council’s website at www.golfsouthayrshire.com or by contacting Isobel Sweden, on telephone number 01292 616255.
