2005 TROON JUNIOR GOLF OPEN - TOM LEHMAN TROPHIES

The Tom Lehman Golf Trophies were awarded recently in Troon, at what is believed to be the world’s largest one day Junior Golf Championship. The competition was played over South Ayrshire Council’s popular Lochgreen, Darley and Fullarton golf courses.

Top American professional golfer and British Open winner in 1996, Tom Lehman was so impressed with golfing facilities in Troon when he played in the Open at Troon in the 1997 that he donated trophies to be played for annually in Troon by Juniors.

The Junior Open, an Order of Merit event for Ayrshire boys for the last two years, is firmly established as one of the top events for young golfers in the United Kingdom. Now in its eighth year, the competition attracts more entrants each year with 470 entrants taking part in the 2005 competition.

After presenting the prizes Provost Gordon McKenzie said: ”This well established Junior Golf Championship attracts entrants from all over the United Kingdom, who come to play on South Ayrshire Council’s fine golf courses.

“The Council’s Golf and Fine Turf Team have done a wonderful job yet again, organising and running this prestigious event. All three courses are in excellent condition, and have received much praise from the competition participants.

“It is heartening to see the high standard of golf being played by those taking part in this competition. I hope that they will inspire other players and encourage many youngsters to take up golf.

“I would like to congratulate all who took part in the tournament, and I hope many of this years players return to take part in the competition in 2006 which will take place on Tuesday 1 August 2006.”

The result of the competitions was as follows:
