FUTURE OF CONSERVATORY IS STILL TO BE DECIDED

Although currently closed until further notice because of the condition of parts of the building, the long term future of the conservatory at Belleisle Park has not yet been determined.

A notice displayed at the Victorian building explains that: “Due to continuous vandalism to the structure and in the interest of the general public the conservatory will be closed until further notice.”

Efforts are underway, however, to find a way of saving the property from the prospect of demolition.

An initial estimate has put the cost of refurbishment at £350,000.

Said a spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council: “It is regrettable that vandalism, which has exacerbated deterioration of the building infrastructure caused through age, has brought about the present situation.

“Because of the condition of parts of the building the Council has a duty of care under current Health & Safety regulations to ensure that any potential risk to the public is minimised. Regrettably the Council has no option but to close the conservatory until further notice.

“The interest being shown by members of the public inquiring into the building’s future is readily appreciated.

“Officers of the Council are currently exploring options with regard to the long term future of the building.

“These options include the possibility of third part involvement in securing funding for the restoration and maintenance of the conservatory.”
