BARASSIE STEPS FOR WALKERS AND CYCLISTS

As part of the Scottish Government Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets project a new set of steps have been built at a cost of £24,000, which link Marr College to Kilmarnock Road, Barrassie.

This is just one part of a project that will cost approximately £169,000 that aims to extend access for cyclists in north Troon, and provide a safe route to walk or cycle from the Barassie and Muirhead area to Marr College.

The new steps have been installed at a point on the route, that for many years people had been walking and cycling on. The constant use of this route had caused erosion to occur.

To prevent erosion of the embankment in the future the steps have a specially designed section for cyclists that allow them to walk up or down the steps while pushing their cycle next to them. This negates the need for people to cycle on the embankment.

Provost Gordon McKenzie and Convener of the Council’s Economic and Tourism Development Committee, Councillor Robert Campbell visited the new steps to try them out for themselves.
