CHANGES IN ALLOWAY

A number of changes are under way in Alloway to enhance the safety of pedestrians and motorists, improve travel on the roads, and parking in the village.

In 2003 South Ayrshire Council secured funding from the Scottish Government Public Transport Fund to carry out a variety of projects. One of the projects was the creation of a Quality Transport Corridor on the B7024, which runs through Alloway village and past the Burns Heritage Centre and Burns tourist attractions.

The Council held a public exhibition in Alloway Parish Church in February 2004, to inform members of the public of proposed changes, and to seek their views on the proposals, and listen to any ideas they wished to put forward.

The following changes are being implemented in the village:

  • New improved bus stops with high raised kerbs to allow better access to the low floor buses to assist wheelchair users, older people and people with young children to enter and leave buses more easily.
  • Pedestrian crossing island installed between Alloway Parish Church and the Auld Kirk graveyard.
  • Dedicated parking at Alloway Parish Church.
  • Junction clearance at Murdochs Lone.
  • On road parking on the east side of Alloway.
  • New paving, landscaping and raised crossing at the junction of Millbrae and Alloway.
  • Prioritisation of traffic crossing the River Doon bridge.
A turning place at the bottom of Millbrae.

Convener of South Ayrshire Council’s Economic and Tourism Development Committee, Councillor Robert Campbell said: “The changes that are being made in the village will assist with traffic calming, and further improve the safety of pedestrians and road users.

“The Council has also used funding from Westrans to upgrade the lighting columns to European Standards in the vicinity of the junction improvements and at the new traffic calming measures at Millbrae. As well as improving road safety the improved lighting at the car parking areas should heighten the sense of safety and security for local people and tourists visiting the area.”

Work is ongoing at present and it is anticipated that it will be competed by 31 March 2005.
