“ SAVE ENERGY IN THE HOME” CALENDAR COMPETITION AWARDS CEREMONY
|
South Ayrshire Depute Provost George Watson, and other South Ayrshire Councillors attended the Energy Agency 2006 Calendar Competition Awards ceremony, held within the County Buildings in Ayr, where they had an opportunity to meet the lucky winners. The annual art competition is run by the Energy Agency in conjunction with South Ayrshire Council primary schools. The theme of the competition is “Save Energy in the Home” and entrants are invited to produce a piece of artwork to reflect this message. Depute Provost George Watson said: “Every year I am amazed at the innovative artwork produced for the Energy Agency calendar, and each year the standard of entries seems to get better. Choosing the winners and the runners up must have been a very hard task. “I would like to congratulate every child who entered, and in particular those were as winners and runners up. Next year I will be displaying the 2006 Energy Agency calendar in my office, and I am sure that it will be admired by many of my visitors. The calendars have already been printed and later this year will be distributed and displayed in a variety of public buildings and Council offices. Chair of the Energy Agency Board, Councillor Douglas Campbell said: “Energy efficiency is very important and the artwork produced by the children clearly demonstrates that they have a good understanding of this. Everyone can help make a big difference to the environment, simply by making a few changes in our lifestyles which will save valuable resources.” All pupils who submitted an entry to the competition received a certificate in recognition of their outstanding efforts. Convener of the Council’s Lifelong Learning Committee, Councillor Alan Murray said: “This competition has, in a fun way, highlighted the importance of energy efficiency to young people, as they had to learn about the topic before they were able to create their artwork. It was apparent to me as I spoke to the winners and runners up that they were enthusiastic and knowledgeable about energy efficiency and in particular how to save energy within the home.” Depute Provost Watson, Councillor Campbell and Councillor Murray presented the children with their prizes, and the local Councillor for the area of the school that each child attends was invited to the ceremony. The children then presented each of the Councillors with a copy of the newly printed 2006 calendar. Thirteen winning entries have been selected, one for each month of the year and one for the front cover of the calendar. Courtesy of the Council each of these winners will be able to swim for free at one of the Council’s pools during the month of September, and they have also received a certificate and an Energy Agency mug containing a variety of ‘goodies’. The twelve runners up received a certificate and an Energy Agency mug filled with ‘goodies’.
