Location
South Ayrshire is situated in the south west of Scotland, and covers an area of 422 square. miles (1,222 square km) extending from Troon and Symington in the north to Ballantrae and Loch Ryan in the south.

Towns in South Ayrshire
The Area includes the towns of Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Maybole and Girvan, together with an extensive rural area containing many small, often remote villages.

Transport Links
The area has good road, rail, air and sea communication including Prestwick International Airport which is linked to an electrified rail system and dedicated rail station.

Population
South Ayrshire has a population of 112,160 (2001) which is 92 persons per square km.

It is an attractive area, with a mix of agricultural land, woodlands and forests, and a long coastline, complementing its centres of population.

The area is steeped in history and culture, together with a wide range of leisure and sporting facilities. There are numerous golf courses including the world famous Royal Troon and Turnberry.

There are three local authorities which border South Ayrshire: North Ayrshire Council, East Ayrshire Council and Dumfries and Galloway Council.
