Lifelong learning

If you would like to learn something different or improve your existing skills, then pop in and see what’s available in your local library. We offer a fun, friendly and informal learning experience in a relaxed library environment.

All South Ayrshire libraries provide free Internet access to library patrons and offer access to a variety of informal learning options. The Cybercentre (located in the Carnegie library) is our flag ship Learning Centre and as such offers more options than the branches.

If you have never used a computer before and would like help to surf the web or send an email then we can help to get you started. Even if you have never used a mouse or keyboard we will have you pointing and clicking in no time at all. A one hour session with an experienced member of staff will generally cover

Basic computer course ‘An Introduction to I.T.’ – Carnegie Library, Cybercentre only

‘An Introduction to IT’ is ideal for the absolute beginner, helping you to use email to keep in touch with friends and relatives, teaching you how to search the Internet to guarantee the best results and much more including

This web site offers access to over 100 courses in a variety of subjects including Digital Literacy and IT Skills, Business and Enterprise Skills, Financial and Economic Literacy, Health and Safety, English Language Skills and Personal Development. All courses are available for free, and are interactive. After successfully completing these courses, you will be able to download your Certificate of Completion.

Driving Theory Test

Theory Test Pro is a highly realistic online simulation of the UK's driving theory test. It contains the entire official test question bank, hazard perception video clips and an online version of the Highway Code. All this material is licensed from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the people who set the tests.

Access to Theory Test Pro is completely free for South Ayrshire library patrons.

How to sign up for Theory Test Pro:

Before proceeding please ensure that you have a current email account.

When you first use Theory Test Pro you will need to register with your name, email address and password. There is no charge for this. This information allows Theory Test Pro to save your test scores so you can follow your progress as you practise for the test.

If you sign up from home or anywhere else outside of the library, you will also need a valid library barcode number, available on your library card.

Learn at your leisure - learning resources and facilities

Available in the Cybercentre, located within the Carnegie library, are a selection of online and book based learning resources available. Independent learners can use these resources to study topics such as Microsoft Office, Windows operating systems, Internet, Email and typing at their own pace and at times which fit into their lifestyles.

The computer facilities are available for a maximum of two hours a day for adult library members and this may vary depending on what library you use. Booking in advance is strongly advised as the Cybercentre is heavily used and we cannot guarantee access to a PC at short notice.

JAWS Screen reader for the visually impaired – Carnegie Library, Cybercentre, Maybole and Girvan library only

JAWS is a popular screen reader which works with a PC to provide access to software applications and the Internet for those who are blind or have low vision. JAWS uses a multilingual synthesizer called Eloquence to speak through the computer’s sound card, reading aloud information from the screen. We can offer one-on-one tuition with a skilled tutor.
