Swimming Lessons
South Ayrshire Council offers a comprehensive range of swimming instruction, at
all our swimming pools, ranging from pre-school to adult lessons.
The quality of our coaching is a reflection of our certified swimming teachers and
a lesson programme devised by a former Commonwealth team manager. Over 100,000 swimming
lessons are delivered annually through our lesson programme.
Lessons
The lessons are a block of ten half hour lessons for Parent and Child, Ducklings
and Junior classes. The Adult Lessons are a block of ten 45 minute classes.
Pre-School
Parent & Child - A class designed for children aged 6 months
- 3 years. With parent/guardian present in the pool with the child this class improves
water confidence and orientation in a fun way.
Ducklings - For children aged 4 yrs old and not at school. This
group lesson focuses on developing basic aquatic skill, increasing confidence and
having fun in the water.
Children's Lessons
Olly the Octopus Scheme – this scheme is aimed at children
aged 5 (or at school) – 16 years. There are 6 levels of progression within
the scheme working through skill development and distance swimming to build
competency and at the top level to prepare the swimmer for access into other aquatic
clubs such as life saving, competitive swimming, diving, sub aqua and canoeing.
When issuing a receipt on enrolling for a course of lessons, the receipt shows all
dates for the lessons in that block. On week 7 of the course children staying in
their present class are given their passports to take to cash desk for re-enrolment;
children who are being moved up due to an improvement in their ability are issued
with their passports in week 8.
Adult
These group sessions are designed to meet the individual adult learners' needs.
These needs can include water confidence, swimming competency, improved mobility,
weight loss or access to other aquatic activities.
Schools Swimming
We also provide a curriculum swimming programme accessed via the school system.
Competitive Level Swimming
South Ayrshire Swim team (SAST) in partnership with South Ayrshire Council provides
coaching up to National and International competition level. Maybole and Girvan
Swim teams also operate a coaching programme from Maybole Swimming Pool.
