John Pollock Centre
John Pollock Centre was officially opened to the public on 28th June 1999 and has
established itself as a superb community resource in the heart of North Ayr. It
is situated on the site originally occupied by Queen Margaret Academy and later
Mainholm Academy.
The Centre was named after the first headmaster of Mainholm Academy who believed
that education was the key to success.
The Regeneration Team – Ayr is located there and performs a wide range of functions
in pursuit of agreed national and local outcomes. This includes supporting activity
related to improving employability, education, outdoor learning, financial inclusion,
community development and health – including reducing substance misuse.
The John Pollock Centre has established itself as a first class venue for conferences
and meetings. There is a 120 seat Conference Theatre which offers multi-media facilities
and four meeting rooms which can be booked on their own or as breakout rooms to
the Theatre.
There are a number of Partnership funded projects housed within the building which
aim to address the issues relating to urban regeneration and social inclusion. These
include:
- A large-scale employment training initiative which provides a range of training,
personal development and childcare services to residents
- Community development services to ensure meaningful community participation in all
aspects of the Partnership’s decision making processes
- Youth development staff and services
- A Flexible Learning Centre resource aimed at bridging the digital divide.
