Modern Apprenticeships
In South Ayrshire Council we provide a range of Modern and Craft Apprenticeships
for people aged 16 to 20. These apprenticeships offer young people the opportunity
to gain a recognised qualification through learning at work. The Council currently
has over 70 Modern Apprentices working in business and administration, customer
services, land based industries such as horticulture and greenkeeping, health and
social care and construction trades. Modern Apprenticeships are funded by Skills Development Scotland.
To tie in with school leaving dates, we generally recruit for new Modern Apprentices
in August and February. All vacancies for Modern Apprentices are advertised on our
job vacancies.

Cameron Frew, Business and Administration Modern Apprentice
“It has definitely been an interesting experience being involved in South Ayrshire
Council’s Modern Apprentice Programme. When applying for the programme I was looking
to gain one main thing from it, which was experience to help me in the future. I
gained the experience of having a job, which would help me get my foot in the door
with other jobs, but I also gained much more. I have gained new skills and improved
on old skills, took on new challenges, worked with so many interesting people, and
worked on important projects. This certainly was a great opportunity that won’t
only help me in my next job, but will help me all throughout life and all through
my entire career.”
Shannyn Henderson, Business and Administration Modern Apprentice
“I was very lucky to gain a Business and Administration Modern Apprenticeship with
the Council and have been able to expand my knowledge and skills. I am grateful
for this opportunity and the chance to complete an SVQ in Administration. I have
also been fortunate in gaining a temporary post and believe that the skills gained
from being an MA is what enabled me to do so. My aim now is to hopefully gain a
full time, permanent post in South Ayrshire Council but I believe that being an
MA is what has driven me to want to further my career and would recommend and encourage
any young person eligible to put themselves forward.”
