What is the benefit of a Modern Apprenticeship?

Modern Apprenticeship is the right choice if you want to benefit from:

What age would I have to be to do a Modern Apprenticeship?

Modern Apprenticeships in South Ayrshire Council are aimed at people aged between 16 and 20 years of age.

What sorts of jobs can you train for?

There are over 80 different Modern Apprenticeships. These range from Business Administration and Travel Services to Hairdressing and Dental Nursing. However, not all types of Modern Apprenticeships are available through South Ayrshire Council. The Council currently have Modern Apprenticeships in Business and Administration, Customer Service, Land based Industries such as Horticulture and Greenkeeping, Health and Social Care and Construction Trades.

How long is a Modern Apprenticeship?

It ranges from one to four years. It depends on the industry you go into. Most Construction Apprenticeships last four years within the Council.

What sort of qualifications would I get?

You’ll be studying towards a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at Level 2, 3 and/or 4 of the National Qualifications Framework. You’ll normally do these at the Training Link, South Ayrshire Council’s training centre or at college.

Some apprentices start by working towards a Level 2 qualification and move on to Level 3. Some use their qualifications to move into advanced level courses at college or university.

Do I need any qualifications to get in?

It depends on the industry you go into. Most Modern Apprenticeships do not need formal qualifications. However, some do. For example someone aiming at a Construction Modern Apprenticeship in Plumbing will probably need a few relevant Standard Grades.

How would I get into a Modern Apprenticeship?

If you are still at school speak to your careers adviser or get in touch with your local Careers Scotland Centre for information.

Recruitment takes place at specific times of the year. It’s important that you don’t miss the deadline dates. There may be selection or aptitude tests to sit before you are offered a job. Further information is available on MyJobScotland.

How much would I earn?

Modern Apprentice is employed from the first day of their training. The rate of pay is dependent on what industry you are in.
