Temporary Accommodation Strategy

Foreword

South Ayrshire Council's first Temporary Accommodation Strategy is a document put together to plan the provision of sufficient, suitable temporary housing for homeless people in South Ayrshire.

Preventing and addressing homelessness has been recognised as a key policy area by the Scottish Parliament this century.

The Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 reinforced the rights of homeless people by placing a duty on local authorities to provide temporary accommodation, as required, to all applicants assessed as homeless.

Subsequent homelessness legislation has progressively focussed on the standards of temporary accommodation, and the equalisation of opportunities for homeless people to access permanent housing solutions.

We have developed the Temporary Accommodation Strategy to help ensure that we comply with our duties. It was developed following a comprehensive needs assessment and extensive consultation exercise with a wide range of partners and service users. The strategy itself is a living document and will be subject to regular review to continuously improve service delivery and ensure progress is made.

The Council is fully committed to ensuring homeless people have access to suitable temporary accommodation and support to alleviate their homelessness and assist resettlement.

I believe with the help of our partners and customers, the Temporary Accommodation Strategy will assist the Council to meet this commitment through the range of identified actions aimed at ensuring sufficient and effective support and accommodation is provided to address the needs of homeless people in South Ayrshire.
