Housing

Gypsies and Travellers

As a local authority we recognise that Gypsies and Travellers wish to maintain their travelling way of life.

There should be no acts of discrimination against Gypsies or Travellers because of their lifestyle.

Our responsibility is to balance the needs of settled communities with those of Gypsies and Travellers.

As a local authority we welcome participation and involvement of Gypsies and Travellers in the provision of services. Should you wish to participate, please contact the site manager (Telephone 01465 714139).

Houdston Travellers Site

Houdston Travellers Site

The site is situated on the B734, one mile north of Girvan, with good access to local and major road networks. The town has good shopping facilities, school and health services.

Comprising 8 semi-detached serviced utility blocks, each pitch has a parking area sufficient for one residential, and one average sized towing caravan and a vehicle.

The utility blocks were refurbished in 1999 to a high standard. Each unit has a fully fitted kitchen, bathroom and a large storeroom to the rear.

All units have:

  • Good thermal quality to assist in retaining heat.
  • Ramped access.
  • Electric power supply with power card meters (Cards are available from the site manager or the area office).

One unit is fully accessible for disabled persons.

There is a playground on site with plenty of grassed area for children. There is also a portacabin which is used as a classroom with computers and internet access. The facility can also be used by residents for kid’s parties, etc.

South Ayrshire Council actively encourages Gypsies and Travellers to take part in ongoing consultations to further improve the site and services to Gypsies

The first point of contact is the site manager who can give advice on availability, and how to apply for a pitch on the site.  Once on site, the manager can advise or signpost residents to many things both within the local authority and other agencies, including health and education.
