Accident and Emergency
Accident and emergency departments are located at Ayr and Crosshouse Hospitals. In an emergency, you should dial 999 and ask for the service you require. If you have a minor accident and are able to make your own way to hospital, you should attend one of the accident and emergency departments where you will be dealt with as soon as possible.
Out of Hours
Each GP practice is responsible for providing services to patients from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. The rest of the time, including weekends and public holidays, is called ‘out of hours’.

Calling NHS 24: If you or someone you care for are unwell and you feel that it can’t wait until your GP surgery re-opens, then you can call NHS 24. A nurse advisor will assess the situation and advise you on what you should do next. The nurse may explain how you can look after yourself at home, or may forward you to your local NHS Out of Hours services.
When calling with symptoms, you will be asked for your:
- Name
- Address
- Phone Number
- GPs name
- Any medication that they may be taking
