2005 Troon Junior Golf Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies

Provost Councillor Gordon Mackenzie and all the WinnersTuesday 2nd August 2005 marked the eighth anniversary of the Troon Junior Golf Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies. The hugely successful, and reputedly World’s largest, one-day junior golf tournament is played over the Troon Darley, Lochgreen and Fullarton Golf Courses and the 2005 event boasted 471 entries across all handicap and pre-handicap categories of girls and boys, an eighteen percent increase on the 2004 entry.

For the second year in succession, the Ayrshire Golf Association nominated the Darley competition to count as an Order of Merit event for the Ayrshire Boys. With 148 scratch to twelve handicap boys participating, the numbers were consistent with last year. Graeme Gimson of Prestwick St. Cuthbert, equalling the CSS at 73, returned the best gross score and won the Tom Lehman Trophy for boys. Second, third, fourth and fifth scratch prizes were awarded to Craig Scott, Irvine Ravenspark (74), Jamie MacKay, Kilmarnock-Barassie (75, last 3), Christopher Cox, Falkirk (75) and Euan Brown, Kilmarnock-Barassie (76). Liam O’Kane of Pumpherston won best net (75 - 8 = 67; BIH) with prizes for second to fifth net awarded to Stuart Munro, Ayr Belleisle (74 - 7 = 67), James Gibson, Turnberry (78 - 9 = 69; BIH), Stuart Muir, Troon Welbeck (77 - 8 = 69, last 6) and Craig Goodwin, Loudoun (79 – 10 = 69). Adam Foley of Ayr Belleisle had a stroke of genius at the par three 4 th Hole, where he netted a hole-in-one.

Lochgreen hosted 138 boys in the 13 to 20-handicap category. Whilst Allan Todd of Ayr Belleisle returned the best gross score of 76, best net was awarded to Frank O’Rourke, Dullater (79 - 13 = 66; BIH). Prizes for second to fifth net boys were awarded to Cameron Farrell, Cardross (84 - 18 = 66; BIH), Stephen Lawn, Caldwell (79 - 13 = 66), Rory McKenzie, Troon St. Meddans (79 - 12 = 67, last 6) and Calum Cameron, Royal Troon (87 - 20 = 67; BIH).

Nineteen girls in handicap categories one to four competed over Lochgreen. Megan Briggs was unable to defend her 2004 title as she had earned a place in the Scottish Team at the Girls Home Internationals in Surrey. However, Vicki Smith of Kilmarnock-Barassie proved a worthy winner of the girls’ claret jug with a best gross score of eight over par. The best net girls prize was won by Jennifer Linklater of Largs (20) on 68. Kilmarnock-Barassie girls, Hannah Brawley (26) 71 BIH and Katie MacPherson (23) 71 won second and third net prizes.

Fullarton afforded competition to 128 boys and girls with handicaps over twenty-one and twenty-eight respectively, with pre-handicap novices playing a nine-hole Stableford competition at the start of the day. Greg Smail of Monktonhill won best gross boys prize (72) with Kenneth Hogg, Irvine Ravenspark (74) runner-up. Best net boy was Steven Brown of Girvan (32) with a score of 47 (last 9) and second to fifth places were awarded to Ryan Alexander (30) 47, Jordan Hood (30) 48 both Ayr Dalmilling, Calum Nairn, Ayr Belleisle (31) 51; BIH and Kyle Menzies, Muirkirk (32) 51. Nicola McLuckie of Wishaw won best net girls prize (27) with a score of 56 (last 3) with second and third net girls awarded to Emma Duncan, Kilmarnock-Barassie (29) 56 and Vicky Wright, Stranraer (34) 59. The numbers of pre-handicap youngsters taking part in the nine-hole Stableford competition rose by over 300 percent on last year’s entry to 26 participants on the day, a very promising pre-agenda to South Ayrshire Council’s clubgolf Junior Golf Action Plan. Heather Conejo of Williamwood, George Swanky and Frazer McKenzie were joint equal on 27 Stableford points.
