Museums and Galleries
Directions
Rozelle House and the Maclaurin Galleries
Access Information
Rozelle House is an ‘A’ listed building. An elevator and disabled toilet
facilities have been installed. All public areas over three floors are now wheelchair
accessible. However, some Fire-doors may require assistance to open and pass through.
We are trying to rectify this.
The Courtyard has been re-laid with slabs making the surface level.
The Maclaurin Galleries, Tearoom and Gallery toilets are all on the ground floor.
There is car parking outside the House and Galleries and reserved parking for Blue
Badge holders.
Facilities: In addition to the Ladies and Gents toilets, there are two accessible
toilets in Rozelle House, one with a Baby-change facility at wheelchair height.
Both Ladies and Gents toilets have baby-change facilities. The Galleries and Tearoom
support breast-feeding although there is currently no private area for this. The
Tearoom will heat baby food if requested. The ground floor accessible toilet requires
a RADAR key. (RADAR is a UK national key scheme for disabled toilets: www.radar.org.uk). If you are not in possession
of such a key, one is available from either the staff in the Tearoom or the staff
in the Maclaurin Galleries.
There is level access to the Maclaurin Galleries and through to Rozelle House and
Tearoom with access for standard wheelchairs. Two wheelchairs are available for
visitor use. Please telephone the galleries in advance of your visit if you have
particular concerns about access or facilities.
By Bus
Rozelle House is in Rozelle Park just off Monument Road in Ayr (5 minutes walk down
the road from Burns Cottage, past the Ivy House Hotel and to the right. The Ayr/Maybole
bus (no 57) stops outside the front gates and leaves from Ayr Bus station at 45
minutes past the hour and Maybole train station at 12 minutes past the hour. There
is also an infrequent service to Dunure from Ayr, which also passes this point at
times during the day (call Ayr Bus station for more info on 01292 613500). Behind
Rozelle Park lies the Loaning where the A1 bus service passes around every 15 minutes
and leaves from the Spar Shop in Boswell Park, Ayr. All of these buses can be caught
later in their journey from Burns Statue Square, which is a minute walk from Ayr
train station.
By train
Ayr is accessible by Train starting from Stranraer, Carlisle, Glasgow, Girvan, Kilmarnock
and many more. There are taxis and buses available to continue your journey to Rozelle.
On foot
Rozelle is about a 30 minute brisk walk from Ayr Train Station and town centre.
Leave Ayr Railway Station and cross into Burns Statue Square, walk past the odeon
cinema to Killock Place. Then turn left along Killock Place into Beresford Terrace
and walk Southwards past Grammar Primary School. Continue along into Carrick Park
and then left into Carrick Avenue. Turn right at the end of Carrick Avenue into
Carrick Road. Continue along Carrick Road and into Monument Road. Continue along
Monument Road and Rozelle House is on the left-hand side.
The McKechnie Institute
Access Information
The McKechnie Institute is a 'B' listed building and visitors should be
aware that at present there is no lift access to the upper floor of the building.
However, there is level access to all rooms on the ground floor and a disabled toilet.
There is limited parking around the building and it is most sensible to park in
the large car park behind the Bank of Scotland on Dalrymple Street.
By Train
There is a train service to Girvan from Ayr and Stranraer. Trains from Glasgow also
run directly to Girvan. The McKechnie Institute is about a 10 minute walk from the
train station and is located in the town centre.
By Bus
The number 58 and 60 buses go from Ayr bus station to Girvan roughly every hour.
They stop on Dalrymple Street by the McKechnie Institute or at Girvan Harbour (just
round the corner form the McKechnie) at different times during the day. These buses
also stop in Burns Statue Square in Ayr (right beside Ayr Train Station).
