2008 Summer Workshop Programme at Rozelle |
ART COURSE This course is designed for those with some experience of drawing and painting and who wish to develop further their skills in interpretation and range of materials used with the guidance of a tutor. WORKSHOP Artists have used birds in their paintings as a form of expression rather than a realistic image, for example, Van Gogh’s crows. This workshop will give participants an introduction to the use of symbolism in painting, in particular, colour symbolism, working with composition and mixed media collage techniques. Participants may bring their own ideas as a base to work from. WORKSHOP Suitable for beginners and those with some experience, this workshop will concentrate on small paintings of Arran, but varying the mood of colour and exploring how this affects the finished pieces. It will investigate complimentary and harmonious colours, plus subtle and contrasting tones. Working in gouache will give a design element to the work. This workshop will also be useful to those who are unsure of placing colours together. WORKSHOP A further look at Arran as a subject for painting, this time concentrating on aspects of Arran rarely explored, such as geology, ancient stones and the mood changes of winter. Working in oils with easels, participants are asked to bring ideas and their own photographs and sketches to the workshop. WORKSHOP Taking spring flowers as a starting point, this workshop will look at ways of deconstructing our perceptions of flowers. It will concentrate on using the varied shapes of all parts of the flowers, and working in mixed media materials, such as tissue paper, thin acrylics and drawing tools, to create a rich, evocative spring abstract. Weather permitting this workshop will use Rozelle Pond as inspiration for capturing reflections and ripples, and studying how light and water interplay on surfaces. Participants will do a series of small watercolour paintings to broaden and loosen techniques in recording reflections and ripples. WORKSHOP Taking watercolour sketches as a source from the previous week’s workshop, this will focus on developing ideas and creating new work using the fluidity of oil paint to interpret reflections and ripples on water. Participants will work with easels. WORKSHOP It is said that “artistic licence” allows a painter to move things around a bit. This workshop working in gouache, will concentrate on making composition work for the participant, looking at playing with perspective, changing colours and places for artistic effect. Participants should bring along source material, if possible, to assist them in gaining experience of composition – often a neglected area of artistic progress. ART COURSE Under the guidance of a tutor, this popular outdoor sketching course allows participants to work in the inspiring grounds of Rozelle Park and later in the studio, to create finished works from initial sketches and paintings. Please bring suitable clothing and a portable seat for working out-of-doors.
