Eighteen exhibitors from the art group show a range of paintings in the Maclaurin Galleries.

Scottish Bestiary
Prints from the Maclaurin Collection
19th January – 23rd February

In mediaeval times most book collections or libraries included one or more Bestiaries, illuminated manuscripts, which contained descriptions and illustrations of mythical monsters and more agreeable beasts. In 1986, the Paragon Press devised and published in portfolio form a modern bestiary with text by the Orkney poet, George Mackay Brown, illustrated by seven Scottish artists, namely Peter Howson, June Redfern, Steven Campbell, Jack Knox, Adrian Wiszniewski, Bruce McLean and John Bellany. The exhibition is a chance to view the etchings and lithographs created for this 20th century Scottish Bestiary.

David Croft-Smith
Paintings
21st January – 23rd February

David Croft-Smith was involved in theatre design and production for many years. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and Hospitalfield in Arbroath, and since then he has had many exhibitions in the UK and abroad, and his work is held in various private and public collections, including Kelvingrove Gallery. During his years in art education and theatre production, he developed an interest in sailing, and on retiring spent 10 years cruising the Mediterranean, visiting many of the classical sights from Spain to Turkey. This exhibition in the Maclaurin Galleries shows one side of his eclectic artistic output.

The Maclaurin Collection – 25 Years

2008 marks 25 years of the Maclaurin Collection. The first public showing of the initial collection was in December 1983, although works had been collected before then. From the early days, due to the foresight and diligence of the Purchasing Committee, the collection acquired works by significant contemporary artists of the 20th century, including Patrick Heron, Bridget Riley and several of the prominent figures in Scottish Art, such as Alan Davie and John Bellany. Three special exhibitions in the summer will highlight the range of works in the collection, showing paintings and sculpture by Scottish, British and European artists.

South by South West
The Story of Art in the South West
3rd June – 21st September

The third Future Museum exhibition, South by South West will tell the story of art in the South West area, from 1780 to present day, predominately through the fine art collections held in Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. The exhibition will be shown simultaneously over three venues, from June to September, highlighting works by artists who originated from Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway, or who were inspired by the region.

The Maclaurin Galleries will show the first period, 1780-1880, looking at themes of landscape, portraiture, industry, Robert Burns, the Scottish domestic interior and the Pre-Raphaelite connection with Penkill Castle at Old Dailly, and featuring work by such artists as, Horatio McCulloch, David Octavius Hill, the Faed family, William Bell Scott and Arthur Hughes.

The second period 1880-1940 will be shown at the Tolbooth, Kirkcudbright (June/July), later moving to Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries (August/September). This exhibition will feature the Glasgow Boys and the landscape of Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire as inspirational place, with reference to the artistic community of Kirkcudbright.

The third period 1940-2008 will be shown at the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock. This will concentrate on work produced in the 20th century on the themes of Scottish Renaissance, the Edinburgh and Glasgow schools, painting in the landscape tradition, and the human condition. A “new visions” section will look at work in different media, from photography and video to sculpture and landscape art. Three new commissions will form part of the new visions theme created by artists, Rodderick Buchanan, Graham Fagen and Kathleen Mackay.

Future Museum is a partnership between East Ayrshire Council, Dumfries and Galloway Council, North Ayrshire Council, South Ayrshire Council and the independent museums of the south west of Scotland. The project has been funded by the Regional Development Challenge Fund, which is funded by the Scottish Executive and administered by the Scottish Museums Council on its behalf.
