What does the Licensing Board do?

The Licensing Board considers applications, and then grants or refuses applications for licences for selling alcoholic liquor or gaming facilities.

No, at the moment an application can only be accepted by post or in person at our licensing offices

How much does a licence cost?

The cost of Premises Licences, are based on the rateable value of your property. Details of all licence fees

Who do I make my cheque payable to?

Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to South Ayrshire Council.

How long will my licence be valid for?

A Premises Licence is granted in perpetuity (forever) unless you are required to advise us of major changes.

A Personal Licence is granted for 10 years.

How long will it take to process my application?

It will take around 6 - 8 weeks to process your licence application. During this time you can contact the licensing section who can update you.

Once I get my premises licence will there be any further costs?

Yes. There will be an annual fee due on 1st October every year.

Will I be sent a reminder for my annual fee?

Yes, we will remind you when this is due

Can I get an occasional licence?

A premises licence holder, a personal licence holder or a voluntary organisation may apply for an occasional licence. A minimum of 28 days notice is required for an occasional licence.

Can a club hold an event for non-members?

It can only do so if it applies for an occasional licence (minimum 28 days notice required)

Can I get additional hours?

An application can be made by the holder of a premises licence for extended hours to cater for a special event. The cost is £10. A minimum of 14 days notice is required. See Liquor Licensing Forms

What happens if my premises manager leaves?

You must advise the Board within 7 days of the manager leaving. You then have six weeks from the date the manager left to substitute a new premises manager. See Liquor Licensing Forms

Must I tell the Board if I am charged or convicted of an offence?

A personal licence holder who is charged with a relevant offence must advise the Court of this and produce their licence to the court. If the licence holder is then convicted they must also advise the Licensing Board of this within a month of the conviction.

Do I need to display the premises licence?

The summary of the premises licence (or a certified copy) must be displayed on the premises where it can be capable of being read by persons frequenting the premises. The full premises licence, including layout and operating plans (or certified copies) must be kept on the premises and must be produced on request to a police officer or licensing standards officer

Do I need to display signs in my premises?

There are signs which must be displayed in accordance with the mandatory conditions in the premises licence. For further information please contact our Licensing Standards Officer - 01292 617686

Do I need to display my personal licence?

No. However a police officer or licensing standards officer may ask a personal licence holder to produce their personal licence for examination and failure to produce it is an offence.

Can I have a gaming machine in my premises?

If you have a premises Licence then you can have up to two gaming machines on the premises by giving notification of this to Licensing Board and on payment of the fee. The machines must be Category C or D. You should check with the Gambling Commission for further information on machine categories.

Can poker be played on my premises?

How do I complain about problems in licensed premises?

In the first instance you may wish to contact the premises manager directly. If this does not resolve the problem then you should contact the Licensing Standards Officer who will try to resolve the problem(Tel 01292 617686) or email licensing@south-ayrshire.gov.uk

If the problem persists then you can request a review of the premises licence
