Food Safety
The work of the Food Safety Team covers a wide range of food related issues. It carries out inspections of businesses preparing, manufacturing, catering, or retailing of food. Certain food manufacturers can be approved to trade under specific legislation, which allows them to supply food to other retail outlets and to trade, in some cases, throughout Europe.
The Team acts as a consultee in the licensing of premises for the selling of alcohol, street trading, and late hours catering. It provides comments on proposed food businesses at the planning and building warrant stages. Businesses can get advice and guidance on the legislation affecting their trade and on any proposed changes to the business.
The Team investigates complaints, samples food products and is involved in controlling the movement of foodstuffs throughout the European Union. Cases of food borne illness notified by the Consultant in Public Health Medicine are investigated to identify the source of any outbreak.
