Environmental Health

Food Safety

The work of our food enforcement officers covers a wide range of food related issues. We undertake inspections of businesses preparing, manufacturing, catering, or retailing of food. Certain food manufacturers can be approved to trade under specific legislation, which allows them to supply food to other retail outlets and to trade, in some cases, throughout the E.U.

We act as a consultee in the licensing of premises for the selling of alcohol, street trading, and late hours catering. We provide comments on proposed food businesses at the planning and building warrant stages. Businesses can get free advice and guidance on the legislation affecting their trade and on any proposed changes to the business.

Environmental Health also investigate complaints, sample food products and is involved in controlling the movement of foodstuffs throughout the E.U. Cases of food borne illness notified by the Consultant in Public Health Medicine, NHS Ayrshire and Arran are investigated to identify the source of any outbreak.
