Environmental Health

Welcome to The Environmental Health Division

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the buildings and landscapes we inhabit affect us all. Directly or indirectly they affect our health.

The aim of Environmental Health is to improve human health and the quality of life.

Our contribution to this improvement comes through our involvement in areas such as Food Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Public Health, Environmental Protection, Housing Standards, Pest Control and Dog Control.

As can be seen from the above Environmental Health is a multi-function profession concerned with inspection, education and regulations in respect of Environmental Health. Accordingly we are involved in a range of activities including surveillance and monitoring of health related conditions and industrial hazards, providing assistance, advice and guidance to businesses and consumers and enforcing minimum standards and requirements through legislation.

Therefore, it is important that we are aware of actual or potential hazards and ensure appropriate action is taken to deal with them. In some instances this may result in direct action and in others we may need to refer to or press other agencies to act.

Environmental Health does not function in isolation but maintains liaison and collaborates with many other agencies as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to the protection of public health. Elsewhere throughout the site you will find links to the agencies we work closely with. Should you have any concerns regarding issues affecting public health you can contact us. We will either deal with the matter ourselves or refer it to the appropriate agency.

Any feedback about the content of the website would be most welcome.
