Noise is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think
about pollution but it is becoming a growing problem.
But what is noise - it is unwanted sound. For instance what I
think to be a reasonable sound level for my stereo you may find
to be unacceptable; the time that my noisy parties go on to you
may find unacceptable or the fact that my burglar alarm keeps
going off because it is faulty you may find unacceptable.
If you have a problem with noise created by a neighbour the first
and best thing to do is to go round and have a word with them
about the problem……it may be that they realise that
the sound is travelling and disturbing you.
If talking or mediation does not help then you do have the right
to take formal action, this in most cases means contacting the
local authority who can investigate complaints of noise from premises
(land and buildings), vehicles, machinery or equipment in the
street. Under sections 80 and 81 of the Environmental
Protection Act 1990 (as amended by the Noise and Statutory Noise Act 1993).
