Empty Homes: Renting and Selling

Renting

Renting through a letting agent

Letting agents can provide a property management service, find you tenants and deal with collection of rents and deposits in exchange for a fee.

Empty Homes Loan Scheme

If you own a property you would like to rent but that requires renovation, South Ayrshire Council is able to offer an interest-free Empty Homes Loan of up to £20,000 to pay for necessary renovation works. More information is available at the Empty Homes Loan webpage or by contacting Chris Carroll on the details below.

Renting the property yourself

If you are thinking of letting your property, it is essential that you are aware of your legal rights and responsibilities. One of the first things you will need to do is register as a landlord.

You will need to consider how you are going to advertise the property for let, setting rent levels and ensuring the property meets a suitable letting standard.

Selling

Estate Agents

You could sell your property on the open market and advertise with a local Estate Agent.

Auction Houses

Empty homes are frequently sold at property auctions.

Matchmaker Scheme

The council are introducing the Matchmaker Scheme which allows empty home owners to list their properties for sale. Potential buyers will also be listed and where there is a match the Empty Homes Officer will pass the potential buyers contact details to the empty home owner.
