South Ayrshire Local Transport Strategy

Local transport strategies are a way in which local authorities are able to analyse current transport trends and propose schemes, policies and programmes to meet the needs of the travelling public and deliver an effective transport system.  Local Transport Strategies also provide an opportunity to promote regional or national schemes and to consider longer-term issues and projects.

Local Transport Strategy

South Ayrshire Council’s Transportation Section are presently preparing South Ayrshire’s Local Transport Strategy covering the years 2006 to 2011. This plan builds on the success of South Ayrshire’s Integrated Local Transport Strategy. This comprehensive strategy was prepared in 2001, covered the financial years from April 2001 to 2006 and successfully delivered many transport improvement schemes.

For example, we:

The Local Transport Strategy 2006-2011 provides the opportunity for South Ayrshire Council to set out its case for local and regional transport improvements in the context of national objectives.

It is intended that there will be full consultation with many people and organisations.  It will include a long-term strategy for transport and a five-year implementation plan, setting out how we will tackle the challenges ahead.

Different individuals have different views – for example, motorists may want more parking, and bus passengers may want more frequent and accessible buses; cyclists may want more cycle facilities and pedestrians may seek a more safe and pleasing environment.  When developing a Local Transport Strategy it is important to ensure all these modes of transport are addressed and that the ability and need to travel shapes all lifestyles, opportunities and choices.  We also have to consider the needs of commercial transport such as road or rail freight, ports, ferries and air transport.

We aim to continue to provide an efficient transport network in all areas of South Ayrshire, suitable to meet changing needs including predicted housing growth, growing congestion problems and also deteriorating infrastructure.  However we aim to keep focused on the Governments objectives of environment, safety, economy, integration, accessibility and social inclusion.

Presently South Ayrshire’s Local Transport Strategy is in its early stages, however we are focused on the provision of an integrated, effective and efficient transport system, which will benefit all members of the community.
