Problem Solving in Ayr Skatepark

The problem

There were concerns about young people using the Skatepark being intimidated by other groups of youths. A Problem Solving Group was formed to address this and other issues of antisocial behaviour around the park. Out of this it was identified the need to provide a safe and fun environment for the Skatepark users.

The solution

The Community Safety Partnership organised a ‘Jam’ for Saturday 28th March 2009. This included displays, coaching and competitions on BMX bike riding, skateboarding and inline skating. Prizes and trophies were awarded for all ages and levels.

A large crowd attended and enjoyed music, the ‘Blue Ignite’ bus and a BBQ, while some took part in a Graffiti Art project to transform the old tennis pavilion block.

Young people are now using the Skatepark more regularly and complaints have reduced by 28%.
