The Over Mill, or Overmills, once one of fourteen mills on the River Ayr, was the last to survive, closing in 1945. The property of the burgh of Ayr, it had been in use for over 300 years and a mill has stood on this site since the thirteenth century. While it was essentially a corn mill, in the mid-eighteenth century a waulk mill was built on to it for the processing of cloth.
