As acknowledged in the launch of Scottish Governments latest National Youth Work Strategy (2012) the potential for youth work to change lives is recognised nationally. Youth Work plays a significant role in delivering improved outcomes for young people in South Ayrshire through universal and targeted provision delivered by Community Learning and Development (CLD) and in partnership with other service providers.
South Ayrshire youth work activity
Community Learning and Development coordinate youth work provision through the South Ayrshire Youth Strategy group, Learning Community Partnerships and through local planning groups involving young people. Our work is planned in line with the Curriculum for Excellence and underpinned by CLD Regulations (2013).
CLD youth work includes:
Youth Groups/ Clubs: Work with young people to plan and deliver 19 weekly youth groups for 8 – 21 year olds across South Ayrshire. In addition we work in partnership with voluntary groups to support the delivery of a further three sessions which includes supporting young adults with physical and or learning disabilities and supporting parent led groups.
Targeted Work: Through More Choice More Chances (MCMC) / Opportunities for All partnerships with all Secondary Schools young people at risk of not achieving a positive destination are identified and CLD staff will work with them to deliver targeted work in response to needs and group interests. This can include completing a Duke of Edinburgh Award or another wider achievement award.
Peer Education: The delivery of the peer education, Positive Opportunities to Alcohol programme, funded by South Ayrshire's Alcohol and Drug Partnership , which now includes New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) and a pilot of steps to deal with stress. This programme is offered to and taken up by every Secondary School in South Ayrshire. CLD and teaching staff co-deliver training to S6’s and the S6’s, in turn, deliver the peer learning programme over 4 6 sessions PSHE Lessons to all S1’s within their school
Youth Awards: CLD work together with partners and young people to enable young people to achieve a range of SQCF, accredited and non-accredited awards including Dynamic Youth, Youth Achievement Awards, Duke of Edinburgh and John Muir.
