Building Standards

South Ayrshire Council Building Standards

Introduction

FlatsThe function of Building Standards has been in existence for many years and was previously known as Building Control. Building Standards primary role is to protect and improve the health, safety and convenience of people using buildings. This is achieved by promoting compliance with the legislation relating to buildings.

This Council is fortunate in having experienced teams of Building Standards staff many of whom have extensive service not only in South Ayrshire but also in other Councils and other sectors of the construction industry. The wealth of knowledge which they have accumulated during these years of service enables them to provide a friendly, efficient and professional service.

Tam O Shanter InnThe construction industry and the science of Building Standards are constantly developing and this is recognised by reviewing the service and staff training to meet these changes and improve on service delivery.

These changes are met with enthusiasm and Building Standards staff maintain communications with fellow professionals not only in the south west of Scotland but also nationally, on matters of common interpretation.

South Ayrshire has a fine stock of old buildings many of which are listed as being of outstanding architectural and/or historic interest. Building Standards staff are well versed in providing a practical and realistic approach to the difficulties that arise in applying the current design requirements to historic buildings.

Whilst Building Standards tries to anticipate future needs it is always receptive to the consideration of changes that may improve the service. It may not always be possible to adapt the building warrant system to meet specific needs because of the constraints of legislation but where possible every endeavour will be made to meet requests.

It is hoped that this section is found to be a useful and interesting guide to the various Building Standards Services. However, this section cannot cover all circumstances and should further information be required or if the work of Building Standards raises any questions then staff will be pleased to discuss any matter.
