Arranging your Civil Ceremony

A Civil Ceremony is a statement of commitment of your new life together, creating your own views and setting your own expectations for each other – a ceremony as unique and individual as you are.

A Registrar from our team will be assigned to your ceremony and will contact you as a means of introduction and to discuss your arrangements. South Ayrshire Registration Service offer a pre-ceremony meeting which allows couples and the Registrar to meet to establish rapport, plan your ceremony and discuss arrangements for the day itself.

Music is available at our Registration Offices or alternatively you can provide your own music.

Civil ceremonies can take place in an agreed venue seven days a week, in Ayr Town Hall and Girvan Registration Office on weekdays and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and in the County Buildings only on Saturday afternoons.

You may also wish to involve family or friends in your ceremony by having them read poetry or readings for you. Religious readings and hymns are now permitted within your civil marriage.

On The Day

The Ceremony

The ceremony usually lasts 15-20 minutes with the exchanging of vows and you may also wish to exchange rings. The registrar will be happy to discuss the possibility of introducing other aspects to your ceremony, for example, a special piece of music, poetry, readings, hand fasting or unity candle ceremonies.

Photographs and video recordings

These can take place during your ceremony. Please discuss your plans with your registrar.

Helpful hints

To avoid disappointment book your venue as soon as possible.

Visit the Registration Office and meet with the registrar before your ceremony day.

On the day of your ceremony, arrive in good time. Please remember that arriving late may cause complications for other ceremonies booked to take place on the same day.
