Active Schools

Fiona Morrison

Secondary Coordinator

Fiona Morrison I work alongside Alistair Chalmers as an Active Schools Coordinator (S) in South Ayrshire Secondary schools. I have responsibility for Ayr Academy, Kyle Academy and Queen Margaret Academy.

The main focus of my work in these schools is to encourage children to be more physically active now and also in the future. As a qualified P.E. teacher, I wholeheartedly believe in the benefits of physical activity not just on a physical level but socially and emotionally as well.

My work in schools is focused on providing pupils with the opportunities to become physically active by setting up lunchtime and after schools clubs and also staging sporting festivals for all of the South Ayrshire Schools where pupils can participate and also meet pupils from other schools.

In order to fulfil my role in schools, I work in partnership with the people who currently give their time to run sports clubs and activities and attempt to support them and augment their extra-curricular programmes. In so doing, we hope to afford pupils the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities in formal and informal settings.

An exciting new project this term has been the introduction of the Active Schools Coaching Academy which gives senior pupils across the authority the opportunity to gain recognised Governing Body qualifications with the intention of the pupils then coaching pupils in school and community settings.
