Active Schools

Alastair Chalmers

Secondary Coordinator

Alastair ChalmersHi there, my name is Alastair Chalmers and I am one of the 2 Active Schools Coordinators (S). I have responsibility for 5 schools: Belmont Academy; Carrick Academy; Girvan Academy; Marr College; and Prestwick Academy.

My main aim is to try and provide the children in my schools, with as many opportunities as possible to be physically active. These opportunities will be in the form of after school clubs, lunch time activities, along with sports festivals for both local and authority wide events.

A large part of my role is to support and work in partnership with people who are already involved in the delivery and co-ordination of sports clubs, school-based activity and health education.

One of the main projects I am involved with currently is the Coach Education Academy. This is an exciting sports initiative that aims to offer selected senior pupils from all eight South Ayrshire secondary schools, the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and experience of coaching young people. With the support and guidance of the Active Schools Team and National Governing Bodies, pupils will have the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications in a range of sporting activities. This will hopefully lead to them becoming involved with the delivery of sports coaching within the schools setting and local communities, and thus increase the capacity of sporting opportunities available for children and young people.

If you are interested in finding out more info about Active Schools in Secondary schools, or are interested in volunteering opportunities please don’t hesitate to contact me.
