Handball

Active Schools / Scottish Handball Association partnership

Active Schools have partnered with the Scottish Handball Association to offer every school in South Ayrshire the opportunity to become active through the sport of Handball.

These sessions will mainly be delivered through after-school programmes and will be coordinated by all Active Schools Coordinators (P). The programme will also be overseen by the Chairman of the Scottish Handball Association and some of the sessions will be delivered by the current Scottish Men’s International team coach – Jose Benavides.

As the awareness of Handball grows throughout each Cluster within South Ayrshire, development clubs will be opened to allow children the opportunity to take the sport further.

Food Hygiene And Healthy Eating Pilot

This 6 week pilot scheme is being delivered in the Prestwick Cluster. The course is based around a six-week block of rugby coaching sessions delivered by Scottish Rugby Union Community coaches and coordinated by Active Schools. Each participating school will receive rugby equipment for their school along with some goodies from Food Standards Agency Scotland. On completion of the course and return of the FSAS evaluation form each participating school will receive a signed framed Scottish Rugby team photograph/certificate of merit.

The Food Hygiene and Healthy Eating teaching material consists of a pupil workbook and teacher guidance booklet. The workbooks contain 6 activities (3 on healthy eating and 3 on food hygiene) to be delivered by the teacher during the six-week block of coaching. Each activity will take about an hour to complete. FSAS will provide ongoing support to teachers throughout the programme.

This project, a partnership with SRU, FSAS and SAC Active Schools, will link strongly to Health Promoting schools giving evidence of physical activity, diet and nutrition and encouraging a healthy lifestyle."
