Kirsty MacKay

Active Schools

Kirsty Mackay

Hi, my name is Kirsty Mackay and I am one of the 2 Active Schools Coordinators within secondary schools. I have responsibility for 3 schools: Ayr Academy; Kyle Academy; and Queen Margaret Academy.

My main aim is to try and provide the children in my schools, with as many opportunities as possible to be physically active. These opportunities will be in the form of after school clubs, lunch time activities, along with sports festivals for both local and authority wide events. In particular I am looking to target young people who do not take part in traditional sports and offer them alternative activities such as dance, cheerleading, orienteering, etc....all ideas welcome!!

A large part of my role is to support and work in partnership with people who are already involved in the delivery and co-ordination of sports clubs, school-based activity and health education.

One of the main projects I am involved with is the Coach Education Academy. This is an exciting sports initiative that aims to offer selected senior pupils from all eight South Ayrshire secondary schools, the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and experience of coaching young people. With the support and guidance of the Active Schools Team and National Governing Bodies, pupils will have the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications in a range of sporting activities. This will lead to them having the opportunity to become involved with the delivery of sports coaching within the schools setting and local communities, and thus increase the capacity of sporting opportunities available for children and young people.
